This Wednesday, I was fortunate to be a guest on Joyce Estey‘s monthly radio program Educationally Speaking, accompanied by professor and poet BJ Ward, author Jessica Cooper, and poets Nick Heacock and Angela Chiu.

We were invited to appear on Joyce’s program on WRJN to discuss our involvement with the Warren County Community College ASA Creative Writing program, one of the few Creative Writing Associate Degree programs in the country, and the only one so far on the East Coast. A Gathering of Poets and Authors

This past Thursday, April 21, I was fortunate enough to take part in the Visiting Authors Series at Warren County Community College. While every year the Visiting Author Series strives to bring one or two authors to the campus for a public reading of their work to wide audience (attendance is always free of charge), once a year the evening is filled with literally dozens of talented authors and poets presenting their works. Among these contributing authors was yours truly, who was given the chance to read two short works of creative nonfiction to the assembled crowd, Fireside Chat and A Little Hike.

Once a year, the event also acts as a release party for the school’s Art and Literary Magazine, Ars Poetica. Hosted by Professors B.J. Ward and Brian Bradford, and Ars Poetica Editors-in-Chief Angela Chiu and Peace Mazelis, this meeting of the Visiting Authors Series included appearances by WCCC students and winners of the Warren County High School Fiction Contest, whose work appears in the 2011 issue of Ars Poetica. Ever received a review from someone regarding your work that was not just unflattering, but unabashedly hateful and abusive? If you are a writer, the answer to this question can only be yes. All writers are subjected to spitefully aggressive reviews, and some (like Dorothy Parker reviewing Winnie the Pooh) like to dish it out with equal enthusiasm.

So, with this in mind, here’s a HuffPost feature I stumbled upon this weekend featuring what is most likely a very modest selection of truly mean book reviews. Have any favorites of your own that you would like to share? Better yet, share some of the worst that your own work has received. The healing has to start somewhere.
